Communities

West of Orkney Windfarm

As part of our mission to deliver a world-leading offshore windfarm, we are continuing to communicate openly with communities across the north of Scotland and offer multiple opportunities for us to meet and hear your views.

Prior to submitting our consent applications in 2023, we held a total of 33 events across Sutherland, Caithness and Orkney.  These included project specific consultation events, community panels, and 'formal' Pre-Application Consultation (PAC) events. As part of our commitment to hear from as many people as possible, we also attended the Durness Gathering, the Halkirk Games, the Dounby Show and the Orkney County Show during the summers of 2022 and 2023.

In 2024, we would love to see you at one of the following community events where we will be returning with our mobile exhibition:

  • Caithness Show, Thurso (Fri 19th & Sat 20th July)

  • Halkirk Highland Games, Halkirk (Sat 27th July)

  • Dounby Show, Dounby, Orkney (Thu 8th August)

  • Orkney County Show, Kirkwall, Orkney (Sat 10th August)

  •

Our virtual public exhibition can also continue to be accessed here.

Our Pre-Application Consultation (PAC) Report presented an overview of our consultation to date and the output of our community consultation survey and was submitted alongside our consent applications to Scottish Ministers and The Highland Council.

The Highland Council has now approved the onshore application for planning permission in principle – which outlines the underground cables and electrical infrastructure required to connect our £multi-billion windfarm to the national transmission network.

Accompanying each application is an extensive suite of assessments based on survey data collected over two and a half years which can be viewed here:

Donations to small organisations

The West of Orkney Windfarm is keen to support small organisations and projects across the north of Scotland.

We are delighted to offer donations to local initiatives based in Orkney, Caithness and Sutherland in particular, and would welcome applications for activities including (but not restricted to):

  • Education in science, technology, engineering, maths (STEM) and the environment
  • Social enterprises or initiatives
  • The arts

If you think your organisation might be eligible, please fill out our donations application form.

We will review all applications on a regular basis and will inform you of our decision.

Please note we do receive a number of applications and unfortunately we are not always able to support every request.
